If your gums bleed when you brush or look puffier than they used to, you probably want to know one thing first: whether the damage can be undone. Early gum disease can be reversed. Advanced gum disease can't be reversed, but treatment can slow it down and help you hold on to your natural teeth.

This guide walks you through both stages, what gum disease treatment involves, and how we care for your gums at Rome Dental & Implant Center. If you'd like to read about the warning signs first, see our guide to bleeding gums and gum disease.

Can gum disease be reversed?

Early gum disease, called gingivitis, can be reversed. The American Dental Association says that at this stage the disease is still reversible and can usually be eliminated by a professional cleaning, followed by brushing and flossing every day at home.

Advanced gum disease, called periodontitis, works differently. The CDC explains that periodontitis can't be reversed, but it can be slowed down and managed with professional treatment. That's why the stage you're in matters so much, and why it pays to have your gums checked early.

How do you know which stage of gum disease you have?

A dental exam is how you find out which stage you're in, because treatment depends on the type of gum disease and how far it has progressed. Signs to watch for at home include gums that are red, swollen or tender, gums that bleed easily, gums pulling away from your teeth, loose or sensitive teeth, and bad breath that won't go away.

If you're new to us, your first visit is a comprehensive exam with Dr. Jonathan Candido, so he understands your full dental health before he recommends anything. We'll take the images he needs, talk through what's bothering you, and you'll leave with clear options and honest prices.

What does gum disease treatment involve?

Gum disease treatment starts with removing the plaque and buildup that keep your gums inflamed, and the right approach depends on your stage. For gingivitis, a professional cleaning and steady habits at home are often enough to bring your gums back to health.

For periodontitis, the first step is usually a deep cleaning, which dentists call scaling and root planing. The CDC also lists prescribed medications, such as oral rinses, and surgery as options. The National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research notes that surgical treatment may be needed in advanced cases.

Gum care is part of our everyday care, alongside gentle cleanings and checkups. You can read more about gum disease treatment at our Rome dental office.

Can treating gum disease help you keep your teeth?

Yes. Treating gum disease slows it down, and that protects the bone and gum tissue that hold your teeth in place. According to NIDCR, gum disease is an infection of those tissues, and when it goes untreated it can spread to the bones supporting your teeth. In the worst cases, teeth may become loose or need to be removed.

Keeping your own teeth matters to Dr. Candido. He always tries to save teeth when he can, and if a smaller repair will do the job, that's what he recommends. When he does suggest a crown or an implant, he'll explain why, show you your options side by side and let you decide.

How do you keep gum disease from coming back?

Daily care at home and regular professional cleanings keep gum disease under control after treatment. The CDC recommends brushing twice a day, flossing every day, and getting regular professional cleanings and a dental checkup at least once a year.

It also helps to know what raises your risk. NIDCR names smoking or using tobacco as the most significant risk factor, and lists diabetes, genetics, stress and hormonal changes among the others. If any of those apply to you, mention them at your visit so we have the full picture of your health.
